7 Tips for Moving Quickly
This blog post is sponsored by 24/7 Logistic Services, but all thoughts are my own.
I had to move in TWO WEEKS.
Okay… I only moved from one side of the house to the other.
Alright, it was really just my office, but it felt like moving. Not to mention, I actually did have to help my old roommate move and find new roommates all in the span of two weeks.
But even still, it was one of the easiest moves I’ve done. And I would know, considering I’ve had some tough moves—like when I had to haul my mom’s fully unpacked rental to her new home across town during the pandemic. Essentially, my stepdad and I were the heavy lifters of what felt like the world’s heaviest items.
Next time, I’m definitely hiring the best affordable movers that money can buy.
Whether you’re moving to a new house, moving for the first time, or just need to move quickly, here are a few tips to make your transition easier.
Pick a day to move (and be ready a day before that)
While you don’t have to make a daily or hourly itinerary, deciding what day you’re going to move eases a ton of unnecessary stress. You can actually start planning, finding people to help you, hiring movers, renting trucks, etc.
We all know that things rarely go as planned, but saving large packing tasks for the day of is just asking for trouble (and arguments). Plus, you may need to do some last-minute cleaning, patching, or painting to make sure you bag that security deposit.
Throw it out!
It’s simple math: the less stuff (and yes, it’s literally just “stuff”) you have, the less you have to pack. Take this time to purge items that you haven’t used in the last two years (or the last year if you’re feeling really free.)
It saves time packing now, unpacking later, and prevents bringing old baggage into your new home.
Secure Free Boxes ASAP
BUYING BOXES? I could never. And you shouldn’t either. When you know where to look, finding free moving boxes is easy. Always start by asking your friends that work at restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, or even hospitals. Boxes are broken down and discarded daily at these places.
You can also check craigslist or local “swap and shop” Facebook pages for people trying to unload their moving boxes.
…Or use other containers
Suitcases, ottomans, hampers, duffel bags, etc., all make great, FREE compartments for moving your items. Instead of stuffing bags inside of bags, use those bags to transport clothes, books, trinkets, etc. that just don’t belong in a box.
When I moved a few years ago, I invested in a couple of large plastic storage containers. Granted, I was putting items in storage, but they still make moving my kitchen items so much easier. And they’re reusable when the time comes.
Use the trash bag trick for your hanging clothes
Okay, this is the game-changer. You’ll get your closet packed and unpacked in NO TIME. Simply, push a decent amount of clothes together. Then, use a garbage bag to scoop your clothes up from the bottom, then pull the drawstrings and wrap them around the hangers.
When you get to your new place all you have to do is hang the clothes and remove the bag!
Tackle one room a day
You can only do it one room, one box, one area at a time. If you have multiple people, assign each person a room. Try your best to keep all corresponding boxes together for easier unloading.
Hire movers
We’re starting to get to the age where asking your friends to help you move in exchange for beer and pizza simply won’t cut it anymore. Hiring movers can feel like a big investment, but nothing beats the level of ease and peace of mind that comes with it.
